Nigel René Borger was born in upstate New York on the coldest recorded day in September. His mother, Betty, felt inconvenienced by the whole event. She held her only son a total of 93 seconds before handing him back to the nurse. As it turned out, that was the longest his mother ever held him in his entire life.

As the youngest child of six, all his sibling’s girls, Nigel’s life was different. He played with dolls and wore hand-me-down girl clothes. His public school life was a gauntlet of constant teasing. However, Nigel had one refuge, he loved to learn and he immersed himself in his books.

Nigel was a genius and his sister Jan knew it. She arranged for him to attend a prestigious private boarding school. Once there his life took off like a rocket. He finished high school in one year, college in two years, and was on to medical school at the age of seventeen. But the most momentous thing to happen in Nigel’s short, hectic life was when he found Blare.
