A Memoir – The First Twenty-five Years

The human desire for information about ancestors, who they were, where they came from, and what their life story was, prompted me to set about writing this story. This is a story about myself, about my small life in a world of large lives. It includes information about events of the time I was living through and some of the people I encountered along the way, both friends and family. My life has had no great accomplishments, no world-renowned success. It has had small successes, failures, tragedies, and triumphs, like so many lives, past, present, and future. It is a fairly normal story, and I have tried to be honest and keep my ego under control.
The contents of this story present actual events and people as best an eighty-six-year-old mind can recall them. There have been some embellishments of course, and some things better left out or glossed over. This is all done to answer the question if ever asked by a future decedent looking at a family tree: who was that guy, Richard Earl Parker? Also known as Dick, Dickie, and sometimes just Parker.
Like most people, I have sometimes wondered and asked myself the questions, “What has been the purpose of my life, and why did God put me here on this earth?” My answer to those questions has always been to have a family. My family is the reason, and they are the purpose, however far they should extend into the future. This little story is dedicated to them.
